Little Learners -
Big Advances

Advances in technol-
ogy and neurobiology have shown that the foundations of suc-
cessful learning are laid long before a child starts the first day of kindergarten. Skills like following simple directions, staying in their seats and devel-

Fostering an Environment
of Lifelong Learning

Research indicates that children who have high-quality care and challenging learning opportunities are more successful in school and society. Establishing an environment that encourages learning at every life stage produces inquiring minds and intellectually engaged citizens. Lifelong learning also opens doors to greater opportunities and contributes to a higher quality of life.

The Piper Trust supports programs that establish an environment of learning at an early age, provide real-life learning opportunities for adolescents as they journey to adulthood and encourage ongoing learning throughout life.

1) Strengthen Early Learning Environments
Ensure that children enter kindergarten ready to learn by supporting programs that:

  • Improve children's access to quality early learning environments in the community.
  • Support quality child care and preschool improvement efforts.

2) Strengthen Out-of-School Experiences
Increase opportunities for young people to successfully navigate the risks of growing up and enhance their social, intellectual and physical well-being by supporting out-of-school programs that:

  • Help struggling students and promote academic success.
  • Provide growth experiences for youth and adolescents.
  • Expand access to role models and mentors for youth and adolescents.

3) Strengthen Lifelong Learning Opportunities
Increase opportunities for residents of Maricopa County to gain knowledge and build skills that enhance their mental and intellectual well-being and social connections throughout their lifetimes by supporting programs that:

  • Provide learning opportunities that empower people to become more involved in their communities.
  • Engage older adults in learning activities that allow them to remain mentally engaged.
