Piper Fellow Paul Mittman

Paul Mittman

"I've been an effective president of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine during times of stability, periods of steady growth and occasional crises. The Southwest College of the future, however, needs me to be an even better president."

 — Paul Mittman, N.D., Ed.D., President and CEO, Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine

Fellow Biography

Dr. Paul Mittman began his work 28 years ago in naturopathic medicine, which integrates therapeutic lifestyle changes with conventional and natural therapies. After 12 years in private practice, he moved to Arizona in 1997 to join the faculty at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and help a young school train a new generation of naturopathic practitioners. He became college president in 1999. In May 2009, the college purchased an office building adjacent to the school's Tempe campus, creating an opportunity to co-locate medical centers and academic facilities to a single site. The board of trustees has challenged Dr. Mittman to raise the funds required for the capital improvements as well as expansion of care to medically underserved populations.

Field Notes

With the Piper Fellowship, Dr. Mittman will split his sabbatical in 2010 between sessions at the The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and the Lance Armstrong Foundation in Austin, Texas. At IU, he will work toward a Certificate in Fund Raising Management; the SCNM board chair will join him at The Center on Philanthropy for the "Purposeful Boards, Powerful Fundraising" session. Monthly, he will go to Texas to meet with Philippe Hills, the Lance Armstrong Foundation EVP of development for personal coaching. Hills will also visit Tempe to assess the college's strengths and challenges, infrastructures and capacity for generating charitable contributions.
