Picturing Maricopa: A Glimpse of Serving Basic Needs

The photographs included in this March Piper Notebook are only a few of the images from the Picturing Maricopa project that Piper Trust commissioned. While the goal of the project was to provide professional photographs nonprofits could use to tell their stories, these photos provide a concrete sense of part of our community safety net.

A Community Photography Project

Photographs are important for communication because they tell stories and provide experiences. A photo places the viewer in a moment in time and conveys the message of that moment. Few nonprofits have budgets that allow them to hire outstanding photographers. Even so, we know that quality photography is essential for these organizations to tell their stories to their clients, their community partners and potential donors.

Piper Trust introduced Picturing Maricopa, a community art program, to offer the services of talented photographers to nonprofit organizations, which gain usage rights to the photographs. Each year, Picturing Maricopa links 15 agencies with 15 photographers. A traveling exhibition takes a number of images to a variety of locations around the Valley.
