What We Fund

GRANTS BY APPLICATION

Piper Trust’s responsive grantmaking focuses on Virginia Galvin Piper’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents of Maricopa County. The Trust awards grants in six core program areas through a rigorous competitive grantmaking process.

  • Arts and Culture
  • Children
  • Education
  • Healthcare and Medical Research
  • Older Adults
  • Religious Organizations

Each core area has a stated objective and specific strategies to meet that goal, and grant proposals must align with these guidelines.

The Trust’s grantmaking process is grounded in relationships. Staff works closely with potential grantees to develop and strengthen their proposals.

Grants from the Trust have ranged from a few thousand to several million dollars. See our grantmaking history for a detailed list of grants the Trust has awarded.

TRUST-INITIATED GRANTMAKING

In addition to application-based grantmaking, the Trust also supports initiatives, programs, and projects that address unique community needs, support the nonprofit sector, and expand our efforts for wider impact. These investments are typically identified by the Trust or philanthropic partners.

Programmatic Grants

Efforts to improve service delivery, expand programs and services, or pilot new approaches. The Trust is committed to supporting the full cost to execute high-impact efforts and will fund indirect expenses included in a program budget.

Capital Campaign Grants

Typically multi-million, multi-year fundraising efforts to support land acquisition, construction, etc.

Capital Project Grants

Typically a discreet short-term, small scale construction effort such as a building expansion; renovation of an existing facility, or capital purchases to support programs and services.

  • Efforts that expand beyond an organization’s stated mission
  • Efforts that were previously supported solely with public funds
  • Event or program sponsorships
  • Scholarships
  • Programs that occur within the classroom as part of the regular school day
