PHOENIX (November 17, 2008)Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust today announced a second group of Community Relief Grants, part of a $1 million commitment to aid Maricopa County nonprofits providing direct assistance to the community.

"Piper trustees made this commitment to provide relief to organizations strained to the breaking point as costs have mounted and donations have dropped," said Judy Jolley Mohraz, Ph.D., president and CEO of Piper Trust. "We also encourage individuals to stretch in this holiday period when nonprofits often raise as much as half of their annual operating revenue."

The Trust awarded a total of $275,000 to 11 organizations serving individuals, families and homeless youth:
Andre' House of Arizona to support meal services; Association of Arizona Food Banks to support meal services; Central Arizona Shelter Services to support the Vista Colina shelter; HomeBase Youth Services to support emergency housing services; Lodestar Day Resource Center to provide general support; Maggie's Place to support emergency housing services; Paz de Christo Community Center to support meal services; A New Leaf to support La Mesita family shelter; The Salvation Army to support the Kaiser Family Center; Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development to support emergency housing services; UMOM New Day Centers to support emergency housing services.

Last month, Piper Trust made $200,000 in Community Relief Grants to four human services agencies providing basic needs of food and shelter to residents with the greatest needs in Maricopa County. The initial recipients were Central Arizona Shelter Services, Human Services Campus, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Joseph the Worker.

Piper Trust is committed to raise public awareness of the plight of nonprofits and will allocate the remaining funds before March 31, 2009.
