Piper Trust Awards $4.6 Million in Second Quarter Grants, More Than Half for Community Relief in Arts and Human Services

Grants

With nonprofit organizations facing continued pressures to increase services with fewer revenues, the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust awarded $2.6 million in grants for Community Relief in Maricopa County, Arizona, representing 55 percent of total 2nd quarter 2011 grantmaking of $4.6 million. The undesignated relief grants include:

  • $502,500 in Community Relief grants to 22 arts and culture organizations.
  • $995,000 in Community Relief grants to eight afterschool food programs and eight community-based healthcare and dental clinics and mobile healthcare vans.
  • $750,000 in Community Relief grants to 17 emergency food and shelter agencies.
  • $300,000 for the third year of the Homelessness and Hunger Funders Collaborative Project.

“The Piper Trustees continue to assess urgent needs in the county. While a foundation cannot replace public funding it can help with emergency necessities for recently impoverished families. It can respond to the soaring number of children in afterschool programs where snack time represents a major meal for many children,” said Judy Jolley Mohraz, Piper Trust president and CEO.

The Piper Community Relief grants offer help to arts and culture organizations struggling to maintain revenues as income declines. Grants to community clinics and mobile medical vans keep medical and dental services available to uninsured families with children, pregnant mothers and homeless youth, as well as emergency food and shelter.

“We need to dispel the myth that homelessness is a vet on the street,” said Dr. Randy Christensen, medical director of the Crews’n Healthmobile, a mobile clinic for homeless teens receiving a Piper Community Relief grant.

“There is a whole new population of homeless families with children, people who did everything right, lost it all and are now on the streets. It’s as simple as a car breaking down, not being able to get to work and losing a job, or someone gets sick and medical costs mean losing an apartment.”

Other grants awarded in the quarter include $500,000 for a new Phoenix Theatre venue for new theater works and outreach programs, $336,017 for the Reach Out and Read early literacy project at pediatric medical clinics, and $271,000 for the Arizona BUILD Initiative, a collaborative project with Helios Education Foundation and Steele Foundation to create a comprehensive system addressing young children’s needs in health, mental health, nutrition, early care and education, and family support.
